The infrared spectra of gaseous methanol adsorbed on solid aluminum chloride catalyst are investigated to afford a spectroscopic contribution to knowledge of the alkylation mechanism of this alcohol with aluminum chloride. Three types of adsorbed species are found in equilibrium depending on the vapour tension of adsorbing gas. The spectroscopic results suggest a weakness of CO bond in the adsorbed molecules and they spectroscopically confirm the alkylation mechanism of alcohol with aluminum chloride catalyst supposed by other authors.
