Oocytes of Carassius auratus Linn., before the beginning of yolk synthesis, have been studied by means of electron microscopy. During this period of development, it is possible to recognize in the growing oocytes a succession of morphological steps, i.e., cytolisome formation related to the elimination of useless substances and organelles; relationships between nucleus and mitochondria, and mitochondrial multiplication; increasing of cytoplasmic basophilia; cortex evolution and beginning of pinocytotic activity on the oocyte surface.
