The study of fluid distribution of intra- and extra-cellular compartments in the retina has been carried out in vitro, under two different metabolic conditions. When oxygen and glucose were omitted in the incubation medium, a slight swelling of the retina could be measured after a long period of incubation. In the presence of glucose and oxygen no swelling occurs in the retina, even after a prolonged incubation. Under both metabolic conditions, intra- and extra-cellular compartments underwent significant changes. The increasing of inulin space (extra-cellular space) during incubation seems to be parallel to that described for brain slices.
